Yes, she is one of the best selling artists of all time but that is a commerical achievement: when it comes to her art there is next to nothing she has done that is groundbreaking or new. Taylor Swift has become one of the most praised artists of the current era but it is hard for me to see why. They are both people who have moved from their root genre towards synthpop at about the same time 2012-13, which makes them fair for a comparison. I happen to think Tegan and Sara's 2000s work is very underrated, while Taylor Swift in general is very overrated. I've heard the Tegan and Sara album and like it a fair bit but i don't think it's one of their best. I have strong opinions on both - BUT I haven't heard taylor's new album yet. Google Play Music has a duplicate of "Smoking Weed Alone" play under the title "Yellow". (I hadn't actually heard about Crybaby until I read this post, so I'm excited for a new album! I'll report back after I give it a few listens.)Įdit:So. I'm not sure which ones I prefer, and I definitely recognize them as sounding distinctly different, but I really enjoy all three a lot, even though they're not comparable.Īlthough I will say that T&S have done well at conveying their emotion into their songs, regardless of genre. My first favorite T&S album was If It Was You, and I've also really enjoyed Heartthrob (bought it on vinyl) and Love You to Death. But I feel like I also hear a tiny bit of Springsteen keyboard influence as well. I know they've mentioned a Cyndi Lauper influence before, and I think they're definitely conscious of that 80s influence I hear. I'm not sure how much of a role it plays, but one thing that I hear throughout most T&S albums is a strong hint of that 80s sound I grew up on. I can't say anything about TS, but I've been a fan of T&S for a while now. TS-Evermore T&S-Heartthrob (but I think Crybaby may grow to #1) Maybe it’s just part of aging or something, but I’ve found myself more interested in pop music (in particular europop) as I’ve gotten older. Although there were certainly bumps along the way (Lover, ugh) I’ve personally really liked these artists transitions to pop music. I thought TS was at her best with Folklore and Evermore, and while Midnights is a solid album it’s lacking some of the variety and emotions from those stronger albums. It’s early days but I expect it will get lots of plays from me. It’s got great pop songs that got some really fun new sounds without compromising the songwriting and harmonies that are T&S’s bread and butter. I’ve only had a couple of listens to each album, but so far I think T&S have the better album out right now. Which album do you like better and why? What do you think about the similar transitions the artists have made from a more niche genre (TS country and T&S alt-rock) to more of a pop sound? What’s your favorite albums from each? Taylor Swift (TS) and Tegan & Sara (T&S) both just released their 10th studio albums (Midnight & Crybaby, respectively).
